Grants of $45,000 to USA, Canada, and International junior scholars who are within the first ten years of completing their Ph.D. or equivalent professional certification, and to senior scholars who are working in a new area, to conduct innovative research projects related to retirement income issues.

Grant proposals must focus on at least one of the following research areas:

- Social Security and retirement income and policy
- Macroeconomic analyses of Social Security
- Wealth and retirement income
- Program interactions
- International research
- Demographic research

Grant recipients may be required to present their work to the Social Security Administration in Washington, D.C. or Baltimore, Maryland.

Number of Grants:

Up to three grants will be awarded.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants of $45,000 will be awarded based upon the quality of the applicant’s proposal and his or her proposed budget. Indirect costs are capped at 10% for institutions.

Term of Contract:

Applicants are required to complete the research outlined in the proposal within one year of the award.

Qualifications of the Principal Investigator:

- The Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), if applicable, are required to have a Ph.D. or comparable professional certification. Grants are not intended to fund dissertation research.
- The PI and Co-PI must be junior scholar(s) who are within the first 1-10 years of completing their Ph.D. or comparable professional certification or senior scholar(s) working in a new area. The scholar(s) must be employed full-time at an academic or research institution.

There are no regional restrictions for applicants to this program.

Pre-Application Information:

The 2018 Sandell Grant Program deadline is January 31, 2018 by 5:00 PM EST. Grant recipients will be notified in April 2018.

The CRR is offering the opportunity for potential applicants to ask questions about topics, datasets, and research design. The goal of this service is strengthen the quality of the applications and ensure that proposals closely align with the Social Security Administration’s priority interest areas. Please contact CRR Economist Matt Rutledge during the month of November to take advantage of this service.

Additionally, grant applicants have the option to submit up to two letters of recommendation for their proposal. Letters should discuss the qualifications of the applicant to conduct the research outlined in the proposal and advocate for the proposed project. Letters are also subject to the above deadline, and must be submitted through the online system by the person writing the letter.
