Awards to USA individuals to recognize outstanding volunteer contributions to the conservation of natural resources. Awardee, finalists, and runners up will receive up to $50,000 to donate to nonprofits of choice. This program honors volunteers whose activities create, protect, and/or beautify outdoor community spaces and who inspire others to engage in community conservation.

Nominees and their projects must meet the following criteria:

  • Nominee's activity creates, protects and/or beautifies an outdoor community space.
  • Nominee's activity is done on a volunteer basis and is not part of his or her paid employment.
  • Nominee's activity inspires others to engage in community conservation.

Number of Grants:

Two runners up and one winner will be selected from each participating region. Prizes will be awarded in each of the four regions and one winner per region will go on to phase two. In phase two, each regional winner will compete at the national level for the title of National Cox Conserves Hero. In total, 12 individuals and 12 organizations will be recognized.

Estimated Size of Grant:

In addition to individual recognition, all finalists and winners will receive cash awards to be donated to an environmental nonprofit of their choice courtesy of the James M. Cox Foundation.

- 1 Grand-Prize (National Hero): $50,000
- 4 National Finalists (Regional Winners): $10,000 each ($40,000 total)
- 4 Regional Runners up (2nd place): $7,500 each ($30,000 total)
- 4 Regional Second Runners up (3rd place): $5,000 each ($20,000 total)

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Individuals of all ages are eligible to become Cox Conserves Heroes. You may nominate yourself or someone else. Cox Enterprises, its affiliated companies, The Trust for Public Land employees and their immediate families are not eligible. Previous Cox Conserves Heroes and finalists are not eligible.

Nonprofit of Choice Criteria:
- The organization must be a public 501(c)(3).
- The organization’s efforts must focus on environmental improvement.

Pre-Application Information:

Nominations are accepted through August 1 – 15, 2021.

State winners will be added as they are announced and voting will take place October 1-15, 2021.
